Producers: Clarence Hui / Dick Lee / Alex Baboo
Drifting is a very special album. It captured the widest range of music that SL had ever experimented at that time, including funk, soul dance, jazz, ballad, duet and even music blended with traditional Chinese instruments.
Producer Clarence Hui 許願 and SL created another outstanding concept album, yet it was far more abstract and implicit, morphing feelings and sentiments that were hard to depict, such as dreams, hysteria, and exhaustion. The lyrics and music match coherently on both the emotional and thematic levels, which made this album a stepping stone to the creation of Wildflower, SL’s legendary masterpiece.
Since the breakthrough single Paradise in my heart 前塵, SL demonstrated further advancement in her vocal ability, as evident in Dreamer 破曉 I & II, And so it goes 微涼 , Thanks for your love 多謝, and Crazy for you 瘋了. Her relentless progress helped strengthen her status as one of the most brilliant and verstaile contemporary female vocalists in Asia.
This album was designed in two simple thematic colours: black & white (accented with mint green on the inner leaf). The album cover and production credits were presented in a way like a still-shot of a widescreen black and white movie. Attached to the album was a black and white photo booklet, featuring SL’s poetic adaptations of the lyrics. The mixing and matering of this album were conducted in Japan. Not only it was based on a technological consideration, the cooperation was also part of a broader strategy of SL and her own record label Stardust Factory to penetrate the Japanese music market and widen her fan base in Asia.
Drifting is deemend by many SL fans their all-time favourite.

Album Review
Vocal Performance - 10/10.
It was a perfect performance. She was practically leap-frogging from her last album to this one, which almost came across as impossible in light of how outstanding her last album was. Her emotions seemed to have blended, or melted, compeltely in the melodies and lyrics, her vocals were always sincere, moving, and at times heart-wrenching. One can imagine how hard SL had worked to perfect her vocals. Her performance in this album was almost like an enlightenment.
Music - 9/10.
It was a mass ensemble of all her strengths: R&B, ballad, soul dance, funk.... Producers (Clarence Hui, Dick Lee and Alex Baboo) formed the trinity that gave perfect balance to the song selection and ensured that there was enough room for SL to elevate to a whole new level. The reception of the album proved their judgment a success.
Lyrics - 8.5/10
SL spent a lot of time with lyricists to ensure that they captured her sentiments, thoughts and emotions in each song. Richard Lam, Calvin Poon and Thomas Chow continued to bring outstanding lyrics to the table and even SL indicated the lyrics were like a double-edged sword, they were so powerful whcih made her cry every time she sang in the studio. Xiao Mei's And So it goes captured the hearts of countless SL fans and formed an unspoken bond between them and SL.
Arrangement - 8/10
Dick Lee added more oriental music elements in the arrangement. He was mimicking the approach he adopted for his own albums, and yet he had outdone himself. Alex Baboo also gave a breath of fresh air to SL's dance megahit. The best arrangements go to Dreamer I&II, Hello My Loneliness, and Drifting.
Background Vocals - 8/10
Featuring background vocals by SL, Cherrie Choi and Clarence Hui.
Recording & Mixing - 9/10
Sophisticated according to the standards then.
Art Direction - 10/10
Kudos to Clarence Hui, Kinson Chan, Kim Robinson and 毛澤西 for yet another masterpiece. Thematic colours: B&W, mint green.
